Question ; calif. drivers
you have a 13 hr day in a mixer 4.75 hrs total on jobsite 8.25 hrs driving time sometimes in the yard for less then 10 mins how do you log this time in yard and be correct? #2 do you have to fill out all seven days before the 13 hr day or just one saying no days over 12hrs for the 7 or 8 days previous?

I don't know how y'all do it out west, but here in TX, you either fill out a log book all the time or you don't at all. The company I work for, we fill out a log every day. Even on days off. Previous companies I have worked for do not fill them out at all. The way I understand it, if your company has trucks that run out of state everyone has to fill out a log book. We have tankers and haul trucks that run in TX, OK, LO, and AR. We do not deliver out of state in a mixer. I worked for a smaller company for a number of years that not one truck went out of the Dallas metroplex area and we didn't have to fill out a log book. Some people say that applies only if you work less than 12 and a half hours a day and you have to log all day after working 12 and a half hours. That would be a pain in the ass. Either do it all day or don't, my opinion. Oh, and always log 15 mins, weather you are there for 5 or 15 mins you have to log 15 to be legal. Screw off a few extra mins if thats what it takes.

We log every day we work. Off hours, on hours, driving and not driving. D.O.T. looks at total drive time and non drive time, as well as off time. Never had to deal with anything more than that. Our company has a pretty simple way of logging regular hours and OT hours.

Pshht!! Logs... Hours of service!!! Lol
We use a time card, not a driver log like OTR drivers. We take our time card with us and log the name of contractor, adress of delivery, time loaded, time left plant, time arrived, time started dumping, time finished, time left job, and time returned to plant. As well as the #of yards delivered, amount of tolls paid, and how much concrete returned to yard.
As for hours of service... My company had 89 drivers and never pulled a guy off a truck for going over hours. Most of our guys do not even know what the FMCSR's are regarding hours! Regularly we have guys working 16-18hr days 5 days a week not including work saturdays and sundays. Weve even had guys do doubles working 24+ hours straight!
I am sure all this will be coming to an end soon though as our company was just bought out by US Concrete. I guess we will see as the transition takes place!
