After dosing a load with water, say to increase the slump by 2 inches (2 gallons per yard) how long do you let it mix to get a homogenous mix? Is the time any different from adding any other admix?
I'm a concrete pump owner/operator, I say it takes 5 minutes of high-speed mixing to get a consistent mix, depending on the condition of the fins. Otherwise, it's just the 'outside' of the mix that gets wet up, and the 'core' stays dry, and that's the last stuff out of the barrel. What do you drivers find?

I would say at least 5 minutes. If its really gross stuff I'll try put the water in first before I start mixing, so it gets to the front.

Ten to 15 revs after the water is shut off.

Usually 1 minute for water, five for any admixtures.

ASTM says 40 revolutions for job site addition of water I believe. 75 revolutions after it is loaded onto the truck. Normally I'll just let it mix until I see the contractor getting antsy.

ASTM C94 12.7 states that 30 revolutions at mixing speed to ensure that a homogeneous mixture is attained. So, with a max speed of 18rpm, that would mean a little under 2 minutes. And no, I wouldn't know that unless I had the manual right in front of me

Imho 5 mins is too much in the summer or hot temps. Also 2 G. per C.Y. is fine for summer or 8 sack, but too much in winter. If it doesn't do what you think it should ask the driver to climb up and spray it to the front of the load.

Well, the water *should* only be added up to the point where it doesn't exceed the water/cement ratio of the mix design. And I've never in my life seen a contractor go over that :-P

And I've never in my life seen a contractor go over that :-P You should come out here and pour for the Amish. When I go to any Amish I leave the plant with it as wet as I can without it coming out the back then when you get there they have you put ALL of your water in the load leaving just enough to rinse in. We have trucks with 400 gal water tanks down to trucks with 200 gal tanks and its the same no mater what you got. But if they put there signature on the waiver its good by me. They just let it self level and thats all they do.

Dude, how much would it rule to have a 400 gallon water tank? We've got some 90 gallon tanks on our trucks, but most are between 125-150.
