I recently went from a company making less money with paid health benefit's to a union driver job making more money and what I thought was paid benifits in the teamsters turns out you have to get in 18 full days a month or your on cobra! it was 15 days when the contract was signed is this normal with union driver jobs? I think it really sucks because the weather effects our jobs more than many other driver jobs I know of. The past 2 months I have missed the 18 days by 1 day!!

most of the time you only get 20-22 working days a month...not including saturdays, wow, sounds like you guys are getting hosed. If you work one day a week here, and are available the rest of the week, your benefits are paid.

Everybody is differrent. It all depends on what you have negotiated in the contract. Sounds to me that you guys have something to fight for at the next contract negotiations.

Ours is based on the hours. If you work 40 hours in a month, your medical is paid through the next month. Its 80 for dental, vision, all the rest of the stuff.

I worked for the local 13, bad number, it went belly up here. We really had no power over the company. Every union meeting was a pregnant dog session as to where to put a 3 cents here, 5 cents there. Now we have company benny's much better to say. When you belong to weak union why bother, I know I'm going to get crap for this but a weak union helps no one. (at least I still have the jacket).

I agree that either you have a strong union or you are wasting your money. What people need to realize is that the union is not the Teamsters, AFL-CIO or UAW. The union is you and your co-workers. The Teamsters, and the like, are just hired representatives. If everyone stands united then you have a union that can get something done.

80 hours per month to get my bennies paid. But the company holds hours "in the bank" from our vacation pay. To explain: If I take a paid week off in July and still work 80+ hours that month I get paid the wages, but the company puts that 40 hours worth of benifit payment into "the bank". And in the winter If I have a 60 hour month they will draw 20 hours out to pay my benefits and still hold the rest of the hours as needed. Good system If you ask me.

That sounds like a pretty generous system. Must be in your contract

Mine does the same thing, I was told that they pay it no matter what, but I just found out we have to get 100 hours a month. But if I work over 100 hours that month they bank it for me.. I remember I didnt get any hours one month but my insurance was paid..

Local 179 out of Joliet Il benifits are as follows day 1 of the week gets your insurance day 2 gets pension that is for any company except for Praire. Now here is the kicker you have to have 4 weeks a month with at least one day in to keep insurance going. They are however proposing hourly insurance in which you will need 100 hours a month to maintain coverage. Our current hourly wage for front discharge mixers is $30.08.

What is Prairie doing differently ? I worked for Prairie after they bought us out ,(Material Service). 1978 to 2000. Then moved to Las Vegas, like an IDIOT !! 2000 wages were 21.50 in Lake County. My wage here in Las Vegas ,working for Cemex,is 22.25 ,down from 24.50! We took a 2 dollar cut to "stay competitive ". Now I was laid off in December, hardly any work here anymore. I hope I can get back into R/M in Illinois. Have you heard about any hiring ? 30 yrs. exp. 11 yd trucks here, booster and two pushers. It's funny here, they get a sprinkle of rain and shut down.

Local 282 Teamsters-
Under our contract our benefits are based on hours worked each quarter. You need to work 120hrs in order to maintain benefits for the next quarter. Thats 15 days in three months. If we work 1000hrs or more in a calander year, then we automatically have our benefits covered for the entire next year.
We dont pay anything for our benefits either, its all employer paid. Every day we are put to work, the employer automatically has to pay 8hrs towards pension, annuity, vacation, and health & welfare.
