I know what you mean. There are maybe six or seven of us who have been with the company for over 20 or 30 years. Some of our younger drivers have been here a few years but many of them come and go. And come back. And leave again. Part of the blame can be laid at the feet of our previous owners. One of them was so hard to work for, in my opinion, that the younger guys wouldn't take his crap and walked off the job. The older drivers just shrugged their shoulders, considered the source of the aggravation, and went back to work. Our current owner is much better and we are starting to see the younger guys staying on the job.

I hear ya. That has been a running joke at my plant. All last year they kept telling us, "Don't worry. It's about to break loose." So we tell each other,"Hey Joe, did you call the electric company and tell them that it's about to break loose?" I tell all new drivers to take 10% of their check and put it away for winter. Those that follow my advice can usually survive the winter if they didn't start too late in the year. I feel sorry for those guys that they hire knowing that they aren't going to have enough work to keep them busy.

We worka 70-hour week due to ODOT rules overruling Federal DOT rules under a "construction" clause. High turnover is a way of life here. I tell every new person that they can kiss their kids goodbye if they think they are going to see daddy at school to watch a play. 15 hours a day is the norm at our plant so we end up with burned-out OTR drivers with kids already grown up.

No broads here either. There's a girl works dispatch & the scales at the quarry, and another young girl runs the blacktop plant, but no drivers. I wonder why? Drive Safe
