At My Company (mainly my plant) they offer winter work for ready mix drivers willing to get off the drivers roster and let other drivers get work. The job duties are jack hammering, sandblasting, welding, painting, and oil delivery. ( we have an heating oil division) This will be my second year delivering oil. It is a cold and stinky job but it pays more then ready mix and beats collecting unemployment so I do it.
Does your company offer any winter work?

Some of the guys at our plant get laid off. But they still have to work one day a week and whenever we need them. I have to work all winter myself. I guess I'm just a sucker like that! My old company would lay us off the I would work every day and bank all the hours plus get my unemployment. that was nice I would have about $10000 that they would spread out between all my paychecks. The new company does not do this.

We have worked all winter for as long as I can remember. They don't open on Saturdays in Jan, Feb and March unless there's a big enough job to make it worthwhile. Some guys take a lay-off.

we've got 8 silos to pour this winter so we will be busy.. 24 hours a day 7 days a week for 15-25 days at a time.. got the hot water goin and draining our tanks and were good.. I also run air through my water lines and take the nozzles off and lay the hoses on the ground to keep the water and moisture out.. what do you guys do to keep your water from freezing up? oh and i set my nozzle to spray a little while im going to the job

They only keep the main plants open at the quarries here in Upstate NY, they load the plants up with drivers, the rest get put in triaxle dump trucks for the winter, or take layoff. Some of the "Chosen Few" get put in heavy equipment for the winter too......... Drive Safe

We also charge for Winter Materilas. I remember we were doing a school job and we had to do s.o.g and it was the coldest day of the year and we were told no water ! The crete froze to the hopper and chutes so you didn't have to rinse down! The end of day wash out was tricky.

We stay open (a lot of big projects going), but I can tell its getting slower, I'm starting later and getting off earlier.
We're draining water tanks, batching with warm water, the whole winter thing. Good times.

busy isnt even the right word for it lol.. they're looking to hire a night crew.. which sucks because I just got a new truck and I'm gonna have a bunch of newbies in it at night not taking care of it.. I'm anal about my truck.. dash has to be armor all'd everyday usually a few times while i'm waiting to pour, cab gets vaccuumed after I'm done everyday and I spray the cab off at the end of the day also so it makes it easier to wash on fridays.. oh and I have a certain airf freshner I use lol..

hmm winter work, we change our mixture and drive as much concrete in winter time as we do in summer time. there is only a small ammount difference the last few years. a huge building boom here at the moment. meaning noone gets laid off. atm.

We have 2 plants, 1 in NH, and another down the road in MA. (9 miles away). All are MA. driver take voluntary lay-off because they make out great on un-employment. NH has crappy Unemployment so we work there is only 8 of us. They give us small things to try to keep us busy. We usually finish every thing within the first week and 1/2. If there is no work they still allow us to stay there for 40 hours. It's OK at first but then the storys get old and the card games get boring. Last year I took layoff for 2 months just for a change in scenery. I went 2 weeks without looking at my truck because I'm at the end of the list. Senior drivers get loaded first. Sometimes there is only 4 loads all day for the 8 guys. Over 2 weeks I sat in a chair for 80 hours. Lets say I was well rested and very bored. 10X12 room with 8 guys is a bit like jail...add in a large table and a fridge. Tight quarders.

Although we dont have heated water lines in the trucks,we work all winter. We have many large projects going in OKC. We just add hot water to the water tanks, add a little 2% calcium, put our water hoses in the cab and keep on going!!
