I have driven Advance for all my years in the business. I have been thrown into an Oshkosh a time or two and hated it, even after getting used to the controls!! Just for the record, my vote is for Advance! I would like to thank member Conman for coming up with the idea for this poll.

I personnaly started out in a westernstar rear, than moved to a advance. drove advance for 6 yrs or so. than the company went with all oshkosh! was a major transformation, never the less no choice. drove oshkosh for prob 6 yrs. now im back in a brand new advance (2005). as with the advance i started out with a older units, which in my opinon does'nt do any truck justice!!!!!!! Never the less i did get into brand spankin new ones (oshkosh). they are a totally different breed of truck! they ride like caddys, even without airride! unbeleivable power/torqe.M-11 motors, these trucks could get ya in alot of trouble because of that! almost 80 MPH! didnt go that fast but it was nice to know i had it!!!! oshkoshs would go just about anywhere! i always said that if you took advance and oshkosh(loaded 12yds) lined them up on a job site that was'nt fit for a monster truck! the oshkosh would be so far in you would have a problem gettin her out. but never the less i currently run advance 2005 model and i like it. but im still an oshkosh man sooooo with that my votes for OSHKOSH There are some negetive features of oshkosh that most will not like. 1- steering raidius / steering wheel are too large 2- front-end or the nose a bit different 3- the controls are all backwards compared to advance 4- they seem more top heavy I will be posting some pics for matt to submit to all. i just need to get them together. I guess that once ya get used to your truck it really doesnt matter what make/model/year it is just that you r happy in her! T-BONE

At this point and time in the poll I gotta throw the tie breaker in and say,,,,,,,,As a driver my vote goes to Advance Only because thats what I have used most of the time.. I agree with the thought that given time to get use to the truck either one does the job well. Dont ya love it when dispatch throws ya under a buss and puts ya in a truck ya aint use to I do think Oshkosh just might get around a bit better off road..
As far as working on either truck from a wrenches veiw I just might pick Oshkosh,,it seems a lil easier to work in and around the frame rails on a Oshkosh truck then an Advance..(just seems like Advance has packed things into rails to tightly making maintaince a bit tougher for me???)

When I started driving Ready Mix I learned and drove Advance Mixers after 4 years I got thrown into a newer Oshkosh and hated it at first, but learned it was a driver friendly truck in my opinion ( ride comfort and ease of control operation) not to mention the thing crawled though almost anything! My company believes in keeping a well updated fleet so I’m back in a 2005 Advance and what an improvement over old models I drove, the thing has good power and off-roads great. As for the 2006 Advance, Terex really screwed them up with the oversized cab. Inside all the room is nice, but I like to see my fenders when hangin the truck over a hole!!!! What’s everybody think about the front discharge versus game? ?

as far as trucks go...i don't like the appearance of the osh kosh with the picnic table front end...but as far as chute controls and that, i think that the way the osh kosh's chutes move are easier to get the hang of, you push forward the chutes go down, you pull back they come up...i don't know if it's all the gaming i've done or what, just makes sense to me. not that i've driven a truck that much, all the loads i've hauled, one 1 yard flowfill load, and 6 frost law 4 yard loads, i don't have that much of an opinion. but they were all hauled in an advance. the only thing that i would change is the drum control, pedal style that is, back for discharge and forward for charge, we had a guy always spilling because he would jam on the brakes and kick the pedal back also...so i think that could be changed, on an osh kosh that is. i recall a late friday night about 5:30 pm when i had to load a certain someone when the smockenator dumped about a yard on the way to the job. that was sweet.

well from this drivers view point, i have driven an advance, pheonix, osh kosh, currently driving an osh kosh, even though my truck will flat out get it, both the advance and osh kosh will reach the posted speed limit, the advance has a much tighter turn ratio, i dont like the looks of the long front end on the osh kosh, and i believe the advance truck just looks better, the osh kosh does have more room in the cab, but that is because you have to use both hands to shift the truck in and out of low gear, big pain in the ass, give me an advance anyday.

hey lyle, just for your info, i don't believe big boy actually gets on this forum, a couple of us in here know him and refer to him so...that's it for now, he is not a member. just to clarify, all this talk of big boy and he's not even involved, i'll have to see if he wants to join this mixerdriver.com cult that matt has started.

I prefer the Oshkosh over the Advance any day. I think they have a better ride for one thing.
I definitely don't like the air ride suspension in the newer (than 87) Advance/Phoenix's. It's just too sloppy.
And though I do prefer the Oshkosh, I prefer the older model like the 87 over the newer S-type. I prefer the standard over the automatic as well. They don't lose the brake air pressure as fast and have better air pressure in the water tank.
I don't care for the backwards controls (barrel and chute) in the Advance.
And I'm not to fond of those new-fangled push button barrel controls in the newer Oshkosh. A regular hand lever is much better and easier to use.
The older, 87, Oshkosh had better visibility than the newer one and better visibilty than the advance. I mean as far as being able to see out and what you are doing.

i don't prefer the older osh kosh's, from a loading standpoint, for some reason i cannot load them out of my plant, takes 8+ minutes to load so...not good. plus it makes a mess.

Well never drove Advance trucks .All Oshkosh here we have several different years . My boss bought a few that were glidered and we have glidered a few in the shop they all have the older 855 cummins .We just converted them to automatics about 4 yrs ago . Was kinda hard getting the drivers use to them they loved the stick shifts. But we had a few clutch burners in the past. Probly why they did so could hire anyone who had a cdl..no offense to anyone but some just cant catch on...only my opinion!! we had just picked up 2 with the M-11 with the Allision world auto push button shifter. Wow new to me . Anyhow we probly got about $12000 into one of the transmissions that took a poop with 8 yards on stuck in 6 th gear locked up tight . We towed to site glad was a power buggy job.... anyhow vote for Oshkosh..but never drove an Advance. take care all......

I have driven Advance, Oshkosh & Mac front loaders both automatic and manual shift. The best truck I ever drove was an old Mac Savage. It had great power, a great ride, the cab was extremely comfortable and all the controls were air actuated. But since you don't find them anymore I have to say that Advance has my vote. If we could take an Oshkosh cab and put it on an Advance truck that would be about perfect as far as I'm concerned.

This ones easy-Oshkosh is the best out of all of em... I started out in Riteways in Salt Lake City in '89. Front discharge mixers where invented in Salt Lake City by the Savage Brothers. I drove Advance and Oshkosh, but Osh's are built ALOT better than Advances by far. Thats one reason why my old company would only lease them because they just didn't last near as long as the Osh's, so they were a bad investment. Riteway was bought out by Advance at one time, thats why Advances have some of the same controls as the old Riteways did and retain many of the other features. We did have a few of the Mac's with the two front axles and the mid-mount engine. Those were the worst mixers there were at that time! Just junk. Not many run them anymore. This is all mute now, because I moved to Phoenix and for some dumb reason- the don't use fronts here! Go fiqure...but its not cold here, either! My old Oshkosh is the yellow one from Utah in the photo section of this site. I took that pic in 2004.....

Never seen an Advance or an Oshkosh back here in the east. McNeilius is the #1 make around North Jersey. Before that we used Challenge Bros. mixers. McNeilius is an easy mixer to use and maintain.[glow=red,2,300][/glow]

Hey Slumpy,
That's a damn fine piece of equipment. ;D I drive the same year. They keep wanting me to take a new truck, but I guess I'm just old school (or crazy). Levers and cables for me thank you. You can have all that electronic crap as far as I'm concerned.

Here's how naive I am: I didn't realize anybody beside OshKosh made a front discharge mixer.
Of course, we're the only company in this region that runs them, and we only have 4, out of 70+ trucks. Its weird, people look at you like you're driving a spaceship on the road, and workers at the jobsites are always coming up and asking me about it.
