There is power in numbers. It’s O.K for YOU to possibly get in an accident because your retreaded steer tire came apart, but not a whole bus load of people! What if you take out a whole bus load of people when your steer tire blows out? I know we don't run any retreaded steer tires on our mixers. It is HIGHLY frowned upon. I thought that running retreads as steers was illegal myself. From what I find, It is in CA, but perfectly legal anywhere else in the US. However, no bus can run retreaded steer tires www.retread.org/PDF/SteerAxle.pdf

fact is it is a cost issue. at the rate that tires get destroyed by rebar and curbs we would be broke if running new tires. had a rear explode 2 weeks a go at a red light. I had heard of it happening before but that was the first time for me. popped a front on crusher run rocks yesturday on a job site. cost factors and production issues will always override safety.

we only run virgins on the front of our trucks.. but I destroyed a float on the front about a month ago.. i ran a huge wingnut for rebar over..the tire that was on there only had about 4000 miles on it lol.. i was on the job and they had to sent a tire truck out to me.. that cost them about $900 for everything

There is power in numbers. But that would require more than me or you standing up and demanding a change. Personally, I will never ride on retread steers. They can fire me if they wish. I've had too many caps come off and destroy fenders. I shudder to think what would happen in a front with a load on cruising at highway speeds. I wonder who was there to speak for us when the decisions were made to allow retreads on steers. Was it the companies we work for, our unions or the ready mix associations our companies belong to? Whoever it was they sucked.

Blew a right steer about a year ago doing 55 (our top speed) managed to wrestle it to the side of the road (grass shoulder). Glad it didn't happen half a minute later I was just about to enter a sharp left curve and probably would of ended up down the bank and in the pond. Anyway tore the sh** out of my fender never found any part of the headlight or headlight rim. I'm like the rest of you I thought Recaps were illegal on steer tires. Mine were just old, ironically my truck was scheduled to get new tires the next day. Bad timing.
