We just have two Oshkosh mixers, an 88 and a 93. The 88 is a lil old but runs great, the 93 however has a prob.
At start up it smokes a lot. Blue smoke till it warms up, and idle is a lil rough. after about 15 min it gets warm and stops. Then on the days I use the block heater, when it starts it runs good for about 3 mins then goes smokey again still it reaches opp temp.
Think it's something simple? Or needs a rebuild, ie rings/head gaskets. It doesn't seem to consume oil or coolant. Engine is a cummins.

is it an L-10 Cummins? If so, my 95 IH paystar with the L10 was doing this badly (sounded like it was on three cylinders) and the shop replaced the SRC? SRT? SR something valve, and it fixed it.

Hmm gonna have to get back to ya on that. Not sure what model it is. It's the large 38ft 11 yrd mixer. Two air axles in the mid section and the hyd axle in the back.
So an SR something valve....... can anyone elaborate?

We just had this happen to one of our trucks (1996), in our case it was a bad injector, it was on the Cummins motor. Ours was blowing smoke the whole entire time hot or not. It could be anything!

STC valve.
The STC valve advances the injection timing of the injectors under extended idling/light loads, and also when first started. The STC loses strength or something (from my understanding) and some injectors will go into the advanced timing mode and some of them will not. The non advanced injectors/cylinders will not fire/will fire weakly with much unburnt fuel.
If the STC does not work at all, it will smoke white/blue fuel smoke very heavily and will be severely down on power, until the engine warms, but it will not run rough.
bj3976, that truck sounds like the motor had a stuck open injector.
I like the L10, but you can't turn up the motor any, you can increase the low idle and increase the high ilde, but not the fueling.
