Yep, it must say "IDIOT" right across my forehead. At least that's what our second in command must think. A few weeks ago we had an incident where a driver signed up to work both Saturday and Sunday. The company said that he had to choose between the two even though he had plenty of hours available to work. There reasoning was that he wouldn't be able to work 8 days in a row and needed to take a day off. If he worked the weekend then he would have to have Monday off. Well, he filed a grievance and we won. We came to an agreement that if a driver has enough hours to work the weekend he would be able to do so as long everyone was not needed Monday. This past weekend we had our first real test. They failed! They started out great. They told everyone that every driver was needed Monday so then everyone that would be violating the 8 day thing had to choose wether they wanted to work Saturday or Sunday. Everything was working the way we discussed until..... the big order on Monday that required all the drivers to be there moved to Tuesday. They found out Saturday afternoon. Well, I think that they should have then called the drivers that were on the Sunday list that were told they had to choose between the two days and offer them the Sunday work. One driver filed a grievance. I went up to dispatch to talk about it. This is where it gets interesting. It starts out cordial enough, but it quickly escalates into a shouting match. Their line was that they ended up needing everyone anyway so it qualifies under the caveat previously discussed. My line was that on Saturday when they found out about the schedule change they had no idea that they were going to need everyone so then my guy should have been able to work Sunday. My proof was that a). not everyone was there today and b). there were people that were told to call in on Monday to get there start time. If they knew that they definitely needed everyone then they would have known what time they definitely needed them there. This man could not get what I was saying or he could and just hoped to confuse me with double speak and his apparent inability to comprehend. He must think I'm an idiot. I can see right through this. No amount of talk will change the facts. Sorry about the vent guys, but I just get so aggravated when people think I'm an idiot just because I drive a truck.
