Forgot to mention the Diamond Reo had 9yd Rex chain drive hydraulic mixer. When I left that company in 1977 and started with Fla Rock I stepped back in time and drove 1968 Mack DM with a 10yd Rex mechanical chain drive mixer. Some of you older guys remember the old clutch lever and 3spd mixer gear box and the drum direction lever. And then there was the singinging drive shaft off the belt drive power take off that went along the right side of the truck, under the cab and all the way to the rear of the truck. All those U joints that you couldn't get to to grease. What fun we had when they broke.

I was talking with a guy at work whose first truck was an old GMC General (don't know what year, I'm thinking early 80's) with a Rex body on it. The hydraulics were so weak on it that if he had a full chute of mud on, it would actually make the tag axle (and with it, the discharge hopper) bend backwards, causing a huge mess. But for some reason, everybody I talk to always loves their first truck, no matter how much of a pile it is.

I was happy to be off the dump truck and driving a mixer but it was nothing but problems. The truck I'm driving now is the best truck I've ever driven (in over 30 years!) and I will continue to refuse a new truck until they send this one to the scrap heap.
