I can say that I have seen or knew at least 5 people that have died. 3 I knew at the plants or drivers while at work and 2 were crew members while on the job. Be humble out there, your not superman, cars will hit you if not seen and other things can happen at the plant or while driving, If nothing else take nothing for granted, I just watched a crew member step outside the cones for a second and a car hit him and knocked him 40 ft to his death. Time catches up as it always does, knock on wood I'm still ok after 24 years but I watch everything. There is no load worth your life.

Safety first! But you know Yard Bird, no matter how long or how loud we preach it, someone will always think they are ten feet tall and bulletproof. I have seen a number of people get hurt or killed. Some of them I knew. All it takes is one instant of, "I've got it all under control." to change your life and the lives of those around you. Accidents and complacency go hand in hand.

One brother died in a wreck in the 80s, one got killed at the plant, and the rest seem to all be getting the big "C". be safe & healthy brothers, for your family!

One driver before my time rolled a truck down a hill. He had just turned around, didn't have his axles down, or his seatbelt on. He went to shift and it didn't go in, he lost his brakes, and a whole litany of things went wrong.
Another driver rolled a truck down a hill, and the story goes, he couldn't handle taking the pain meds anymore...
We also had an incident locally (not our company supplying) where a pump was pumping down after a pour. He took the whip off for some reason, and it sucked air, the boom moved around violently, and struck a laborer in the back of the head, killing him instantly. The moral of that story, DON'T LET A PUMP RUN DRY! Overflow it if you have to, and just think the whole time the pump operator is yelling at you, the laborers giving you the stink eye, "at least I didn't kill anyone."

Overflow it if you have to, and just think the whole time the pump operator is yelling at you, the laborers giving you the stink eye, "at least I didn't kill anyone." 10-4 on that! We had a guy get killed last year when a pump's hose whipped real bad and knocked him off the roof of the building they were working on. Happened right in front of his brother-in-law and uncle. There is a hidden moral to this story though. The pour, well it got finished, along with two other pours that company had that day. The moral is that the companies, no matter how much they say it, don't give a rat's behind about you or me. The first thing that went through that company's owner mind when he heard the news was, "How much is this going to cost in downtime, law suits and fines?" Don't trust ANYONE with your safety!! You need to look out for you, then if you got time you can check everyone else out.

We've been lucky. No deaths on the job since I've been there. Lots of early deaths, guys dying of cancer at a young age, etc. One guy lived in the apartment we have at the plant and committed suicide in it. He and his wife were doing heroin and after she OD'ed, he OD'ed himself a month later. He was a good guy and a lot of fun. Too bad he got mixed up in that $hit.

None since I've been there..I always get kinda worried about that elbow coming out of the pump what if that bastard came loose? It would take your damn legs off.. So I kinda stand on my bumper or out of the way that way if it comes loose it smacks the truck, because I've seen the way some of these guys put their pump hose on, and it comes loose..

Yeah, I think about that elbow, too. I do the same thing, stand back as far as I can or up on the running board. Some of them move around like they're ready to blow apart.

In our region we had a pump safety summit, and one thing that came out of it is that all those elbows now have a protective mesh thingy on them. It was something Brundage Bone was doing, but now they all are.

There was a guy a few years ago that lost an eye because a pump hose blew apart. There was so much pressure in the hose that concrete went everywhere and a rock took a guys eye out.

Anybody hear about that Monster Truck promoter that got killed? He did an interview in the morning talking about safety and how it's job one at his events. Well, dumbars walked right out in front of a truck and got himself squished for all the kiddies to see. The driver said, "I could feel that I ran over something, but I didn't know what." Goes to show, anybody can buy the farm at any moment. I bet he thought he had that safety thing "under control". I wish he had found a piece of wood to knock on during that interview.

That was right after a 6-year-old kid in Tacoma was killed by a flying piece of metal from a monster truck. Next thing you know, monster truck safety will be all over the news, the Today Show will have interviews, the whole thing. Won't change much, but it'll sell commercials.

We had a new driver still in training get killed on a jobsite about six months ago. He was washing out the bucket/chute under a tower crane and something happened to the crane and the block that rolls back and forth fell from 20+ stories and hit him. That will really make you pay attention and look up.
