I just wondered how many of you have to chip out your own drum? We have a company here that does that for us. The last time the company had a driver chip out his own truck a fish fin about 100 lbs hit him from above and he landed on the sharp fins inside and cut his face all up. That was the end of making a driver do it himself. ,. Its to bad that someone has to get hurt before the company does something to better the situation. He will never be the same.

I have worked for two different companys and both have had the drivers chipping the barrel. That same thing happened to a number of people that i've known. I start at the top even tho it's a little more work, but it's worth it!

The second mixer company I drove for had a contract with some guys who travel the nation doing nothing but chipping out drums. The chipping crew was made up of very short, small Mexican men who crawl in through the load hopper rather than pop the hatches. Those guys were fast too - many times they would knock out 10-15 trucks in a night. My current employer has hired a chipping crew before but if work is slow they bring us in (those who want to come in) so we can get some extra hours. I don't mind chipping but I'm too big to get into the tail fins. We have a laborer who works for us (huge guy!!!) and I figured out that if I have him stand inside the drum and hit the lower fins hard with a sledge he can knock off a couple hundred pounds like nothing .

Ya, we chip our own drums. Its not that bad though. Two times a year. Once in mid summer and then in jan. so that penndot and nydot can check our fins for wear. They also check our water gages to make sure there right too.

We have a bunch of Mexicans from Kentucky do the job for us. When I got in my truck the next day my XM was on a Spanish station! But, for thirty years I did it myself. One time I inherited a truck from a guy who had retired. I don't think he washed it out for the last year he was there. There was at least a yard and a half inside.

^^ We have a guy that is so anxious to leave at the end of the day he never washes his truck out.. he always said he did it at the job.. his truck was chipped out 3 months ago and there is 2 yards in it..he never wants to work and wants to leave early every chance he can get..Hes the type that would rather sit at home all day then come in for a few hours..he will call them and say "if I'm only gonna get 2 hours I'll stay home" but when his year came around and it was time for him to get a vacation voucher it was only for 4 days and not 5.. Turns out he was 5 hours short of a full vacation..

Used to chip out our trucks at a couple of the plants to get hours the first couple years I worked there. Started having breathing problems (yes I used a resperator) but you still can't avoid breathing in some of the dust. Finally called it quits on chipping when the yard truck had over 6000lbs in it and got nailed by a big chunk falling from above me. Knocked me silly, thank god for hard hats. But the worst chipping job was one afternoon after driving the morning they had me chip out a truck that had hauled mud that morning (humidity inside was 150%) and the temperature was hovering around 100 degrees. Mustv'e sweated out 5 gallons that day.

My current employer is a fantastic employee owned company and they keep nice trucks but radios are strictly forbidden . I was working for different folks on September 11, 2001 and had a second-hand Kraco AM/FM casette player cobbled into the overhead console of the '95 Mack I was driving. G. Gordon Liddy kept my spirits up that day.

Just my luck. The boss just called and wants me to go in tomorrow to chip away. Sounds like lots of fun. Be just three of us there myself, the yard guy, and the boss. GOOD TIMES MAN GOOD TIMES.

When we get our new trucks we weigh them with full fuel and full water to get an actual weight. Then go from there. I've had my truck 2 1/2 years w/o it being jackhammered. We carry 10 1/2 yards in an 11-yard drum. But the last time I had one done, I paid 2 other drivers $75 to do mine and was the "hole-watcher", while they did all the work. I made time and a half for being at work on a Saturday so I didn't really lose any money..
