Our 93 Oshkosh with an L10 300 is smoking like a SOB untill it warms up....strangly though when i plug in the block heater it runs fine for five minutes then smokes like hell until warm, then runs fine.
Any ideas???... any good online parts distributors??? Need a temp sensor and cant find one online.
Thanks!

Sounds like glow plugs. What color is the smoke?

smoke is a light blue, it does not consume any oil or coolant, and we found no presence of water in the oil....

It's a CUMMINS thats the problem!! I got the same motor in my 97 paystar I would bet by spring I'll be putting a new one in. It nonstop smoke! If I have been sitting 20 min or more on a conv. job or filling wheelbarrows she'll smoke out the whole area when I leave. Right now where putting a l10 in one of the trucks from another plant got a nice used one for $4000. At least it will give me some practice for when I got to put a new one in mine. If I could I'd put a good ol mack in my paystar. Now that would be great. LOL Check your rings most likely burnt up.

Blue would be oil. It may be consuming oil and you wouldn't notice, just because there is so much oil. In your car that holds five quarts, if you're down a quart, that's a big deal. If you have 36 quarts (or whatever) in that Cummins, burning a quart would barely register.
How many miles are on it? Is it original, never rebuilt? May be that the valve guides are going out.

you guys have to work on your own trucks?? Not all the guys work on the trucks. At my plant that only has 5 drivers now days the only ones that work on stuff are myself the plant manager and the yard guy. I have many titles batch man/conv operator/tech/maint. and every thing in between. Its funny at plant 1 where the headquarters are they have a big shop with 5 mechanic's who I think are all a group of butf*cks. But the boss will send there junk to us. He says so it gets done rite.

I would think that if it were rings or valve seals it would smoke non stop. This one only smokes till it's warm. But the whole block heater thing is really baffling us...why would it not smoke for 5 mins when i use the block heater and then smoke till it's warm?
We work on our own trucks cause we are just a small precast company and only have two trucks, one for backup.

Two of our 95 paystars were doing this, was told it was the god what is the name of it. ST valve or something? In the injection pump sticking, which advances the timing when cold and under light loading to keep combustion temps up, preventing all the smoke. The truck I drove also had an injector that stuck when cold, and would dump fuel all the time, producing more smoke.
Try this- Get a gallon of lucas Injector Cleaner and upper cylinder lubricant. I'm assuming you got a 50 gallon tank. Pour about a quart of it in an almost empty (only a few gallons left) tank and run it for a bit so it can work a little. Fill tank up, pour another quart in. Do the same thing to the other truck with the other half gallon. May un-stick the valve/injector/s may not.
If you don't got the resources to try that, try tumping 2 quarts of motor oil into the fuel tank with just a few gallons of fuel in the tank (do it hot) and see if it doesn't clear it up, if it does, the lucas stuff will help it.
