If you can afford the price of a gallon of diesel fuel I'd definitely get a diesel. I've heard that you get more truck for your money with a Dodge. I've got an old Chevy pick-up. It's nickel and dimed me here and there (just had the trans rebuilt - $2000!!) but for the past ten years it's been reliable. (My two kids were out on their own for awhile.....then they came back!!!)

Finally. I don't know much about mixer driving, but I did work for a Ford dealer for years.
First of all, what size? If you're getting a half ton, and I'm going to assume late model used, go with a Ford F-150. They have the most features and different configurations. They're dead nuts reliable, since they upgraded the transmission for 2004. Chevys will go through front wheel bearings like nobody's business (my buddy has gone through three on his 3/4ton GMC, to the tune of $600 each), and the older Dodges have an appetite for transmissions. They're allegedly better now, and they don't have problems with their manuals, but older autos suck.
If you're going with 3/4 or 1 ton, you've got some choices to make. A 1999-2003 Ford Super Duty with the 7.3Liter Powerstroke will be the best truck you ever buy. Again, the automatic transmissions they had weren't the best, but a manual will never let you down. The automatic won't most of the time either, and you can upgrade them, but they were known to fail.
Don't touch a 2003-2004 6.0Liter Powerstroke with a 10-foot-pole. They were known for catastrophic engine failures. I drove one with 35 miles on it and a bad turbo. Head gaskets would blow. Any modifications and the warranty was not only null and void, but the engine would cease to run as well. And they ain't cheap to replace. We had one customer at the shop brag about his straight pipe and chip, only to have it towed in the next day on a rollback. That one was about a $14,000 bill.
Dodge 3/4 and 1-tons are nice. The interior is a bit cheap, and the crew cabs aren't really big inside (the Mega Cab is, though), but that Cummins engine is the bomb. Huge power, decent mileage, you can modify it as much as you want and it won't break. The running gear, like the Ford, is also pretty tough. Running gear in a 4x4 Chevy is the reason I won't buy one.
Any questions, just ask.

The Toyota Tundra is a good truck, but their JD Power ratings have been going down lately. I haven't heard much about the Nissan Titan, but the quality ratings on the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56, which are based on the same platform, consistently rank at the bottom of quality rankings. Plus, the rear differential is as small as I've ever seen.
If you've got to go with one of them, the Tundra would be the one I'd go with. Although, you could probably get a screamin' deal on a Titan, since they're now out of production. Nissan will be rebadging a Dodge Ram in the near future.

i got a nice truck I'll sell ya! Yup....me, too!! I have a '96 Chevy 1/2 ton with a recently rebuilt trans and some empty Heineken cans rolling around in the bed. I'll let you have it for cheap. Even cheaper if you let me keep the empties floating in the back.
