Back in the 80's I was driving an old Ford F-9000 with a chain driven barrel. I was delivering one yard to a customer who really only needed about a quarter of a yard to finish his job. When I backed in and started pouring the truck was leaning quite a bit and it twisted the chain and it snapped. The customer didn't want to wait for the mechanic to show up to fix it so he climbed into the barrel with some buckets and did the "bucket brigade" thing with his laborers. I still remind him about it from time to time.

YA KNOW, THE CHAIN NEVER DID COME OFF. BUT THE DRUM DIDN'T HAVE ANY HYDRAULICS. IT HAD PTO TRANSMISSION THAT RAN OFF THE TRUCK'S TRANNY AND THAT WAS RUN BY ANOTHER CHAIN ! SO IF YOU WERE READY TO BACK UP THE TRUCK, YOU HAD TO DISENGAGE THE PTO BEFORE YOU BACKED UP OR THE DRUM WOULD DISCHARGE THE LOAD .OUTSIDE THE TRUCK YOU WOULD OPERATE THE DRUM BY THREE HORIZONTAL LEVERS UNDER THE FRAME (throttle, clutch, charge & discharge gears). THE CHUTE HAD TO BE RAISED OR LOWERED BY TWO OR THREE BIG FRICKIN' GUYS TO PICK UP THE CHUTE PULL OUT A CLEVIS PIN RISE THE CHUTE TO WHERE THEY WANT IT, THEN PUT THE CLEVIS PIN BACK IN TO HOLD THE CHUTE IN POSITION . GOSH... I'M POOPED OUT JUST EXPLAINING IT TO YOU FELLAS . TO TOP THINGS OFF, THE MOTOR RAN A STRAIGHT PIPE(noooo muffler). WHEN YOU FINALLY GOT THAT BEAST ROLLING DOWN THE ROAD, IT WAS A ONE MAN 12 PIECE BAND ;D! WITH ALL THOSE GREASY CHAINS CLICKING & THE CONCRETE CHURNING, THE MOTOR ROARING AND ME GRUNTIN' & GROANIN' & CUSSING IT'S WAS A SIGHT TO BEHOLD !

Lead Dog--Do you remember having to pour curb with those old non-hydraulic trucks? I had a lever located behind the cab that operated the barrel. There was another lever located at the back of the barrel. When I poured curb I would have to keep the driver's door slightly open and lean out of the cab to operate the lever. The chutes were raised and lowered by use of a hand pump also at the back of the barrel so if the customer wanted the chute raised (and wouldn't do it himself) I had to shut the barrel down, jump out of the cab, run to the back of the truck, pump the chute up and then get back into the cab. Then a few minutes later he'd want the chute lowered of course. The only reason our boss stopped ordering the chute pumps is because they stopped making them. Our early trucks were strictly no frills. No a/c, no radios. In the 30 years I worked for him (he died and his sons sold the business) I never knew anyone to get a new pair of wiper blades for his truck. The boss said that wiper blades should last a lifetime and if they didn't you were somehow abusing them. He once accused me of melting my wiper blades by having the defroster on for too long. God forbid I'm actually able to see where I'm going. Yeah, those were the days.

Come to think of it, I drove the "State Of The Art" Crane Carriers with hydraulic brakes, but they had hand cranked chutes......After all these years, what the hell?! Doing sidewalks was a complete catastrophe, get out, crank chute, back in the cab, PTO off, creep forward, stop, PTO in, get out, discharge, crank chute some more, stop discharge, get in, PTO off, creep forward, PTO in, get out, adjust chute AGAIN, discharge......... I just realized now I probably shouldn't bi&%ch too much about my old Advance huh? Drive safe

I will never again complain about my Autocar. I'll have to ask some of the old timers at work about stuff like that.
